INSIGHT

Why go kayaking

There is no more complete, intense and satisfying discipline to practice in a mountain river: the freedom and adrenaline experienced in a kayak run are priceless. Those who practice kayaking establish a privileged relationship with the wild and natural environment in which they find themselves.

The technique

In the high-class canoe, you sit in the cockpit placing your feet against a footrest and pressing your legs against two leg presses. The back is supported by a backrest. A sort of neoprene skirt, called a splash guard, is positioned on the cockpit and prevents the kayak from filling up with water. The boat is run using the whole body to control its direction during the run. An in-depth knowledge of the currents is necessary to avoid capsizing. In this case the kayaker uses a technique, called eskimo, to turn over and avoid to get out the kayak.

The difficulty

Kayaking is the most difficult river discipline to learn. The sensitivity of the boat in the water is such as to require great balance and excellent alertness. You are in an unstable equilibrium position and bound to the kayak. This condition requires, especially when you are learning, a good dose of coolness and courage.

The versatility

Kayaking is the most versatile means of transport on the river: it is in fact possible to tackle streams that are impossible to navigate with a raft or hydrospeed.

The fame

Among the river disciplines, kayaking is undoubtedly the best known to the public: thanks to sponsors such as the Redbull, like other extreme sports such as snowboarding, wingsuit flying and downhill, the production of emotional videos that enhance the exploits of the most reckless in the world.
